An image created by Peter Tonge, a post-doctoral student in Dr. Andras Nagy's lab, has been selected by the journal Biochemistry and Cell Biology (BCB) for the front cover of the journal’s 2011 issues. Peter will also be acknowledged in every issue where his photo is shown. The editors at BCB received thousands of entries in response to their call for photos.

The montage is composed of pictures from Peter’s image library that represent pluripotent stem cells and their differentiated derivatives.  The nucleus (blue) is made up of hoechst stained cells, the cytoplasm (red) is made up of cytoplasmic stains and the plasma membrane (green) is composed of cell surface staining.  The background is represented by phase images of stem cells and their differentiated derivatives.

“My inspiration for the image was the famous Star Wars mosaic posters that are made up of individual frames from the films,” says Peter. “I thought a similar mosaic picture of a cell composed of stem cell images would look fantastic. It took a few attempts to make the mosaic look like a cell, but it worked in the end.”
